Gum treatment

Gum Treatment: - Did you know 8 out of 10 people have gum disease? Yes, you read that right. The Adult Oral Health Survey 2003 conducted by the Singapore Health Promotion Board showed that 85% of Singaporeans have periodontal (gum) disease.

Signs of gum (periodontal) disease:

  • Red, swollen, tender, painful or bleeding gums
  • Gums that have shrunk from the teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • A bad taste in the mouth
  • Abscesses between teeth and gums
  • The fit of denture has changed and/or
  • Loose teeth; drifting apart of teeth with gaps appearing between teeth

Periodontal disease is a chronic infection that destroys the supporting bone and attachment tissues that hold your teeth in place in your mouth.

The milder form of gum disease is also known as gingivitis, which is reversible, and the more severe form is called periodontitis. In advanced stages, the bone supporting the teeth is irreversibly lost. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to premature tooth.

The good news is that you can keep your natural teeth with proper care.

Gum treatment comprises of multiple types of specific treatment on the gums for patients with diagnosed gum problems/ concerns such as patients with loose teeth, severe bone loss, long looking teeth etc.

Gum treatment can also sometimes involves opening the gum (called a flap) to debride the affected area and cleaning it thoroughly.

There would not be a need to worry about pain as gum treatment/deep cleaning is always done under local anesthetic to ensure that our patients are pain free and comfortable throughout the procedure. We also perform functional and aesthetic gum procedures such as crown lengthening for patients with 'short' teeth and soft tissue flaps for patients with long looking teeth.
